What Is Guna Milan?

Guna Milan, also called Ashtakoot Milan or kundali matching, is the classical Vedic method of comparing two birth charts before marriage. It looks at both partners' Moon positions, since the Moon represents the mind and emotional nature, and scores compatibility across eight categories (kootas): Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot, and Nadi. Together they total 36 points, weighted so that the categories affecting health, family, and long-term emotional life (Nadi and Bhakoot) count for far more than surface-level ones like Varna.

This tool computes your Moon's exact sidereal position with Lahiri ayanamsa for both people, then applies the same classical scoring rules a jyotish would use by hand: Nadi and Bhakoot dosha are checked with their standard cancellation conditions, so a same-Nadi pairing that qualifies for cancellation won't be flagged as a dosha.

A score alone never tells the whole story. Two people scoring 20 with Nadi Dosha present face a different conversation than two people scoring 20 with full Nadi points but a weak Varna or Vashya. Read the breakdown below the total, not just the number.

The Eight Kootas

KootaPointsWhat it reads
Varna1Spiritual/ego compatibility, based on Moon sign
Vashya2Mutual attraction and dominance dynamic
Tara3Birth star harmony, health and general fortune
Yoni4Physical and instinctive compatibility
Graha Maitri5Mental and intellectual rapport
Gana6Core temperament match
Bhakoot7Family, emotional, and financial harmony
Nadi8Health and genetic compatibility, the most heavily weighted koota

Frequently Asked Questions

The traditional minimum is 18 out of 36. Scores of 18 to 24 are considered average, 25 to 32 good to excellent, and 33 to 36 exceptional. The total matters less than which specific kootas scored low, especially Nadi and Bhakoot.

Nadi Dosha happens when both partners share the same Nadi type, scoring 0 out of 8, the largest possible point loss. It is traditionally considered the most serious dosha, though it is cancelled if the partners share the same rashi with different nakshatras, or the same nakshatra with different padas.

Bhakoot Dosha occurs when the two Moon signs fall in a 2/12, 5/9, or 6/8 relationship, scoring 0 out of 7. It is considered cancelled when the lords of both Moon signs are natural friends or the same planet.

Guna Milan measures specific astrological compatibility dimensions, not the whole of a relationship. A low score points to areas worth understanding, not an automatic rejection, and should be read alongside a fuller chart analysis rather than the number alone.

No, this tool covers the 36-point Ashtakoot Guna Milan only. Manglik Dosha is assessed separately by checking Mars's house placement in each individual chart, not by comparing the two charts.
